Health is an important part of our breeding decisions.
Both our German Shepherd and Siberian Husky breeding dogs are health tested for:'
• OFA Hips
• OFA Elbows
• Heart
• Eyes
• Thyroid
We use health testing alongside temperament, structure, genetics, working qualities, and our evaluation of each dog when making breeding decisions.
We believe puppies should be raised—not simply bred. Our puppies' early development includes Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), temperament testing, crate introduction, and exposure to children, other animals, everyday noises, and new experiences.
As our puppies grow, we also observe their confidence, energy, engagement, personalities, and developing temperaments. Our goal is to give each puppy a thoughtful start while learning as much as we can about the individual puppy before placement.
Yes. Temperament testing is part of our puppy development and evaluation process.
Testing is considered alongside our observations as the puppies grow. This information helps us better understand individual personalities, confidence, energy levels, responses, and emerging temperaments when considering puppy-family matches.
Some individual puppies may display characteristics worth evaluating as service prospects, and service-dog temperament is particularly meaningful to us because of our personal experience with Loki, Laura's trained Siberian Husky service dog.
However, no puppy can be guaranteed to become a successful service dog.
Suitability depends on the individual dog's temperament, health, development and training, as well as the specific needs of the handler.
We encourage prospective families with service-dog goals to tell us about those goals during the application process so they can be considered when evaluating potential matches
Our German Shepherd program focuses on working lines, including Czech and DDR bloodlines, and we value working and protection ability as part of our program.
Individual puppies may be considered as potential prospects for appropriate working, sport, or protection homes.
As with service work, we don't guarantee that a puppy will ultimately be suitable for a particular working role. Temperament, maturity, training, the individual dog, and the handler all matter.
Absolutely. Family companionship is an important part of our vision for both breeds.
Our goal isn't to put every puppy into the same type of home. Some dogs may develop characteristics suited to working or sport homes, while another puppy may complement an active family. We evaluate each puppy as an individual and want to understand each prospective family's lifestyle and expectations before considering a match.
Our early puppy-development program includes exposure to children.
However, every puppy and every household is different. Families with children should be prepared to provide appropriate supervision, training, boundaries, and respectful interaction between children and their dog. Your household and children's ages are helpful information to include when applying so we can consider the complete family environment during the matching process.
We believe placement should be about more than choosing a puppy based solely on appearance. Throughout development, we observe each puppy's personality, confidence, energy, engagement, responses, and emerging temperament. We combine those observations with temperament testing and what we've learned about prospective families.
Our goal is simple: The right puppy. The right family. A bond built to last.
Your first step is to submit a Puppy Application. The application helps us learn about your household, lifestyle, experience with dogs, and what you're hoping to find in your future German Shepherd or Siberian Husky. Once we've reviewed your application, we'll connect with you to discuss your goals, answer any questions, and determine whether Shadowcrest Kennels is a good fit for your family.
