OUR STORY

Where Purpose Became a Passion

Shadowcrest Kennels began in Albany, Georgia, in 2025, but our story didn't begin with plans to start a breeding program. It began with two dogs who showed us just how important temperament, purpose, and the individual qualities of a dog can be.

My husband, Michael, originally brought a German Shepherd named Calla into our lives with the hope that she could become my service dog. Calla was intelligent, capable, and everything we could have hoped for in a German Shepherd—but her natural drive made it clear that service work wasn't the role best suited to her.

That didn't make Calla the wrong dog. It simply meant she had a different purpose.

Today, Calla is training in IGP with the goal of protection work, giving her an opportunity to develop and use the drive and working qualities that made service work less suited to her.

About a month after Calla joined our family, I purchased a Siberian Husky named Loki for Michael.

We couldn't have known then just how important Loki would become to me.

Loki— The Dog who Changed Our Direction

During a PTSD incident, Loki responded to me instinctively. Without having been trained to perform the task, he provided deep pressure that helped me through the episode.

That moment changed the direction we had expected to take.

We recognized something naturally present in Loki's temperament and began pursuing formal service-dog training with him. Loki completed his service training and is now my trained service dog.

Along the way, he formed an incredible bond with me.

Living with Loki and Calla taught Michael and me an important lesson: a dog's temperament matters tremendously when determining the work and life for which that individual dog may be best suited.

Calla and Loki are very different dogs with very different strengths. Learning to recognize and respect those differences became part of the inspiration behind Shadowcrest Kennels.

THE BEGINNING OF SHADOWCREST

Our experiences with Loki and Calla led Michael and me to look at breeding differently.

We didn't want Shadowcrest Kennels to exist simply to produce German Shepherd and Siberian Husky puppies. We wanted to develop a breeding program where health, temperament, structure, genetics, and purpose guide our decisions.

Our goal is to thoughtfully produce German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies with stable, promising temperaments and evaluate each puppy as an individual.

For families interested in dogs with the potential for service, working, protection, or active companion roles, temperament matters. No breeder can guarantee what an individual puppy will ultimately become, but we can make thoughtful breeding decisions, carefully raise and evaluate our puppies, and help families consider

which puppy may be best suited to their lifestyle and goals.

That philosophy is at the heart of Shadowcrest.

The Family Behind Shadowcrest

Shadowcrest Kennels is the breeding program of Laura and Michael Rodriguez in Albany, Georgia.

What began with Calla and Loki became a shared passion for understanding these two extraordinary breeds and building a program centered around intentional decisions rather than simply producing puppies.

Our dogs are the reason Shadowcrest exists, and the lessons they continue to teach us influence the way we approach our breeding program.

We want the families who come to Shadowcrest to know the people behind the kennel, understand why we make the decisions we make, and feel comfortable asking questions throughout their journey with us.

That relationship doesn't have to end when a puppy goes home.

A Shadowcrest dog will always be part of the Shadowcrest family

OUR PROMISE

Trusted Bloodlines. Timeless Bonds.

Shadowcrest Kennels was founded on a simple realization: the right dog can change a life.

Loki changed mine.

Calla taught us that recognizing a dog's individual strengths can be just as important as having a particular plan for that dog.

Together, they helped give Shadowcrest its purpose.

Today, we're building that purpose into every decision we make—with careful breeding, health testing, early puppy development, thoughtful temperament evaluation, responsible placement, and a commitment to the dogs and families who become part of Shadowcrest.

OUR MISSION

At Shadowcrest Kennels, our mission is to preserve and strengthen the qualities we value in the German Shepherd and Siberian Husky while producing healthy, well-raised puppies prepared for meaningful lives with their future families.

Our German Shepherd and Siberian Husky breeding dogs are health tested for OFA hips, elbows, heart, eyes, and thyroid to help us make informed breeding decisions. But health testing is only one part of our program. Temperament matters. Structure matters. Genetics matter. Early development matters. And the home each puppy eventually joins matters.

Our puppies receive Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), temperament testing, crate introduction, and exposure to children, other animals, everyday noises, and new experiences as part of their early development.

We believe in quality over quantity, purposeful breeding, and taking the time to get to know the puppies we raise.
